Apalachicola Airport

In my April newsletter I mentioned the effort of a few citizens to close the Apalachicola Airport.  This is an historic landmark in Franklin County that attracts many people to our area and creates substantial revenues for the community.  During the past ten years and without much support from the county commissioners, some “future minded” citizens have tried to reserve land around the airport for an industrial park to attract business and employers. The county commissioners are allowing encroachment of housing developments without disclosure to potential homeowners that they will be living in an airport traffic area. This puts the future of the airport at risk. As a member of the Airport Advisory Board, I encourage you and any friends or relatives to contact our county commissioners to stifle this ridiculous effort and require disclosure to potential homeowners. Email the commissioners by contacting the commissioner’s secretary , Amelia Varnes, at avarnes@franklinclerk.com.

A public meeting was held Monday,  March 14,  to discuss an extension of one runway by approximately 1000 to 5000 feet.  The extension would help in the development of the industrial property adjacent to the airport, created jobs and increased revenues for the county and private businesses.  Concerned citizens convinced the Commissioners to remove the extension project from the airports development plan. Taken to the extreme, there are some citizens that want the airport closed.  AAP is the largest airport between Tallahassee and Panama City and dates back to WWII when it was used as a gunnery training facility.  Ever increasing traffic brings thousands of dollars monthly to local businesses. Many of our residents and tourist will tell you that the airport was the deciding factor in their decision to purchase here.  If jobs are to be created in this area, the airport must remain opened and be improved.
